Book 1
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
The first book entails the first uneventful ten years of Harry's life. Well, if you can call defeating Lord Voldemort, the most evil wizard of the 20th century, uneventful. For Harry, who didn't remember this monumentus occasion, it was. Because Lord Voldemort killed his parents, he was sent to live with his Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon, who were both horrid people and their spawn, Dudley. These, Harry's only remaining relatives, made Harry's life miserable. Both his aunt and Uncle despised magic and therefore despised Harry too. He didn't even know he was a wizard until Hagrid, a gigantic man with a pink umbrella, knocked down the door of the place they were staying in on his birthday. With Hagrid, Harry entered the magical world of witchcraft and wizardry. Soon, Harry met Ron and they became instant pals. It took a little more time and a nasty encounter with a troll until they warmed up to Hermione, an exceptionally bright witch. Along with many mischievous nightly adventures throughout the castle under Harry's invisibility cloak and the even more dangerous detentions, Harry enjoyed happiness and solitude, like he never had before. He finally felt like he belonged.
Book 2
Harry Potter and the Chamber of secrets
At first this book seems somewhat unconnected with the series. However, it becomes quite evident in the 6th book how important this book really is. It begins once again at Privet Dr. where Dobby the house elf wreaks havoc in Harry's home in order to prevent him from returning to hogwarts. This is foreshadowing to the horrible things that are in store for the students in the upcoming year. When Harry does finally arrive, in a flying car, he begins the year on quite a wrong foot. Things take a turn for the worse when a series of mysterious and terrifying attacks take place on campus. It doesn't help at all that Harry begins to hear voices and the new defense against the dark arts teacher is a useless and self-absorbed nincompoop. With the introduction of a 50 year old diary from a boy named Tom Riddle, things become obvious they are not at all what they seem. Moaning Myrtle once again witnesses a great portion of the gangs plots to overthrow evil and throws herself down the toilet several times. Harry begins to question the boundaries and grow out of his youthful and naive nature.
Book 3
This book finally lets the reader glimpse a piece of the Harry's parent's lives. With the introduction of the Marauders and the grim, everyone is worried about how much Harry will be able to handle. Harry, meanwhile, is most upset by the fact that he is not allowed to go to Hogsmeade, the neighboring magical town. None of the adults want Harry going because of the looming threat of Sirius Black, an escaped serial killer. Professor Lupin becomes a more and more likable character, but is he what he seems? Most people in the school think Harry is doomed. However, with the help of his two best friends, his invisibility cloak and a mysterious map, Harry just might find a way to sneak himself some fun, and maybe save lives. Plus, the game of quidditch heats up as Oliver Wood's last season finally arrives.
Book 4
All summer Harry Potter has been having nightmares; he knows they are meaningful and is alert. However, with the Quidditch World Cup on the line, he manages to forget about all the people who want him dead to enjoy the summer with the Weasleys' and Hermione. Once again, his happiness is cut short due to the appearance of a death omen above the tents in the finale. The man who sent the deathmark into the sky escapes and leaves behind only Harry's wand and a house ellf named Winky who is promptly dismissed by her master Barty Crouch. Hermione founds SPEW to help house elves, Harry struggles to survive the Tri wizard tournament and Ron develops an inferiority complex. With the congregation of two visiting schools and plenty of ex-death eaters around, everyone is overwhelmed, panicked and even angry. However, when it really matters everyone comes together in an attempt to thwart evil, but is it too late?
Book 5
This is the longest and most depressing of the Harry Potter series. Harry deals with his own tenage-anxiety while accepting that fact that Voldemort has returned and he is somehow connected to him. Horrible dreams, a searing scar and extra lessons with Snape don't help him keep a sound state of mind. Not to mention, the new defense against the Dark Arts teacher, Professor Umbridge(a toad-like woman assigned by the ministry of magic) treats the students like bad children and holds particular contempt for Harry. The Order of the Phoenix, an underground group formed to fight Voldemort, introduces many interesting characters and Professor Lupin returns. The Ministry of Magic is pretty much against the Order of the Phoenix and is working with the media to portray both Dumbledore and Harry in a bad light. The Headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix also brings back Harry's godfather as a major character in the storyline, as it it is his house. The house is not the nicest place, with Kreacher, a twisted house elf and a screeching portait, but it brings everyone together and allows them to observe the adults as they prepare for the war against Lord Voldemort.
Book 6
The news is finally out in the Wizarding world that you-know-who is back. There is chaos, murder and a new minister of magic. Harry prepares for his return to Hogwarts and for his training to fight Lord Voldemort. Since Sirius died, he is crushed and torn with the acquisition of his property. Back at school, Malfoy is finally playing a more diabolical character and not hiding behind shadows anymore. However, although Harry suspects he is up to something, he sees it might be too much for Malfoy to handle. Romance heats up between many major characters and Quidditch becomes a little more interesting. Strange and mysterious attacks continue and everyone realizes that this is the beginning of the end. Harry begins his search for the horcruxes with Dumbledore. Although they have already destroyed two, five more are out there and they are not even sure what they are...
